The Pioneers staved off a late charge by Hickory to win the Wachovia Conference Cup in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference.

The Pioneers produced conference championships in mens and women's outdoor track, and in men's tennis during the spring season. The WHS baseball team made it to the Class 4A quarterfinals. The Pioneers bested the field with 193.5 points; Hickory finished second with 188.5. The Red Tornadoes turned in a strong spring season.
The Hickory baseball team reached the Class 3A western semifinals; the women's soccer team made it to the Class 3A Western Regional finals, and the men's golf team turned in a second-place performance at the Class 3A state championships.
Senior J.T. Poston defended his state title and burned up the course by firing 63 on the opening round and finishing a whopping 13-under-par with a two-day score of 131. Both efforts were state records.
Alexander Central finished third. The Cougars were paced by their softball team, which captured its seventh state title last weekend at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, and the football team, which defeated Hibriten on the final week of the regular season to win the NW3A/4A championship. The Cougars had 171.5 points.
Among the Class 2A schools, Ashe County finished fifth in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference with 99 points; and in Class 1A, Avery turned in a fifth-place finish in the Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference with 142 points.
The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia and the NCHSAA, and it recognizes high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of the state’s four classifications. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, previously known as the Wachovia Trophy, is also associated with the Wachovia Cup. The Wachovia Cup is a statewide award given to schools with the best overall athletic performance in each of the four classifications.
