The Hickory Crawdads scored a run in the top of the ninth and got the game-tying run as far as third base, but the Delmarva Shorebirds escaped for the 7-6 win before 4,478 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Saturday night.

Parker Bridwell of the Shorebirds and Matt Thompson of the Crawdads alternated scoreless frames through the first two innings, but the 'Dads cracked the scoreless tie in the top of the third. Kellin Deglan led off with a walk to start the inning. Teodoro Martinez then laid down a sacrifice bunt to the mound. Bridwell fielded the bunt and tried to get Deglan at second, but the throw was late, enabling Deglan to be safe at second and Martinez to reach first base on the fielder's choice.  One out later, Odubel Herrera plated both runners with a two-run double, and he scored on an RBI single by Tomas Telis for a 3-0 lead.
The Shorebirds (30-26) came racing back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third.  With one out, Jonathan Schoop got on with a walk and quickly scored on an RBI double by Mike Flacco. Kieron Pope followed with a walk, as Flacco swiped third base, putting runners at the corners.  Flacco then charged home on a wild pitch that also advanced Pope to second. Adam Gaylord worked a walk, and then both runners moved up to second and third on a wild pitch.  After Riley Hornback walked to load the bases, left-hander Jimmy Reyes took over on the mound. Reyes retired the next two batters, but a run a run scored an RBI grounder tying the game at 3-3.
Both teams exchanged a pair of runs in the fifth.  The Crawdads (29-26) took a temporary 5-3 lead on RBI doubles by Jurickson Profar and Christian Villanueva in the top of the fifth. But Delmarva came right back with a game-tying two-run homer by Schoop in the bottom of the inning.
Delmarva opened a 7-5 lead with sacrifice flies in the sixth and seventh innings before Hickory attempted their ninth-inning comeback.  Facing David Walters, who picked up his 15th save, Deglan led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a walk to Martinez.  Walters countered by inducing a double play ball, leaving Deglan at third with two outs.  Herrera kept the Crawdads alive with an RBI single to right field that made it 7-6. He later moved to third on a single by Telis. But Villanueva was retired on a long fly ball to the left-field wall that ended the game.
RHP Ben Rowen (0-2) suffered the loss for Hickory; Ashur Tolliver (1-0) registered his first win for Delmarva.
NOTES: The 'Dads will be back home to face the Lakewood BlueClaws on Sunday, June 5 at 5 p.m.  It will be Carnival Day at the ballpark, preceded by a Faith and Family Day service by Lower Creek Baptist Church from 3:30 - 4:15 p.m., open to all fans with a ticket to this game.
