The Alexander Central High softball team under the guidance of head coach Monte Sherrill has known nothing but success during is tenure.

The Cougars (28-1) continued their assault Friday night as they pounded Porter Ridge 7-1 in Taylorsville in the Class 4A Western Semifinals. With the win, the Cougars are on their way back to Raleigh for possibly their seventh state championship.
The Cougars will play North Davidson (26-1) or Southwest Guilford (21-8) for the western title before they aim their sights on another state championship. North Davidson won the state championship last year. The state finals will be June 3-5. The Cougars have outscored their opponents 40-1 in the state playoffs.
In Class 3A, Fred T. Foard and Crest were rained out Friday night. They will play their western semifinal game at 5 pm in Newton Saturday night. The Tigers (22-4) are looking for their first trip to the state tournament since 1998, which is also the last time they won a state championship.

Chad Wright, who spent several years as men's basketball coach at Hibriten High, has resigned as head coach at Draughn.
Wright led the Wildcats to 27 wins during his three-year stay with the program, which includes a 16-10 record this past season. And all of this despite the dismissal of their point guard and the team's best player for disciplinary reasons.
Wright, who resigned to spend more time with his family, also led the Wildcats to their first state playoff appearance in school history. He will remain at the school and teach social studies. He spent six years at Hibriten (32-87); and he coached at West Lincoln for four years (38-63).
