Malcom Styers of the Appalachian State University men's track team earned a spot in the NCAA Championships Friday afternoon.

Styers, a senior from Newton, NC, made the cut by finishing in an 11th-place tie with Matt Pfleger of Kent State in the hammer throw with an effort of 201 feet, eight inches. Styers, who was the Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year in the Southern Conference this season, will make the trip to Drake University in Des Moines IA., for nationals June 8-11. The top 12 finishers in each event qualifies for the NCAA Championships.
Unfortunately, Gayshawna Watkins and Rebecca Hazeltine of the ASU women's track team failed to qualify. Watkins finished in a 37th-place tie in the shot put (45-08.75), and Hazeltine finished in a three-way tie for 18th in the high jump (5-08.75).

Dennis Moore qualified for the 200-meter dash semifinals on Friday. He was fifth in his heat with a time of 21.43, which places him 24th overall going into Saturday's competition. Sean Soderman finished 39th in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase Friday night and did not qualify for nationals. He completed the course in 9:16.88.
The ASU men's 4x100 relay will compete on Saturday. That squad is made of Moore, Justin Thomas, Thomas Lockard and Landon Powell.
