Bumgarner Picks Up First Win PDF Print

It took a while, but Madison Bumgarner finally cracked the win column for the first time this year.

The left-hander went 8 2/3 innings, gave up one earned run and scattered six hits as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 at Dodger Stadium Thursday night.  Bumgarner is one of  three pitchers in Major League history to start in a World Series game and then go winless in his first eight starts the next season. The only other San Francisco starter to lose his first six decisions of the season was Terry Mullholland, who got off to an 0-6 start during his rookie season in 1986. Barry Zito got off to an 0-8 start in 2008.
"I just tried to ignore that and go on," Bumgarner said. "I feel good about throwing a good game and keeping us in there. Wins and losses are something you really can't control, so I tried not to focus on that."
Bumgarner struck out three men and walked two in Thursday's win. And he's has a 1.32 earned-run-average in his last five outings.
