Former University of Maryland freshman quarterback Tyler Smith has transferred to Elon University.

Smith, who gained his release from Maryland, selected Elon over Delaware and Millerville (PA), a Division II school. Smith stands 6-foot-3 and weighs in at 195 pounds. He still has four years of eligibility remaining. Smtih ranks second in the Pennsylvania history in passing yards with 8.035, and in touchdown passes with 87.
Thomas Wilson emerged as Elon's first-string quarterback following spring workouts. First-year coach Jason Swepson is looking to replace Scott Riddle, the all-time leading passer in SoCon history. Appalachian State travels to Elon on Saturday, November 19 in the regular-season finale.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN TO HONOR LATE COACH

A passionate group of Georgia Southern football supporters and fans, and the school's athletic foundation are in the process of raising money to erect a statue of the late Erk Russell, who won three national titles with the Eagles. The statue would be erected outside Paulson Stadium.

Russell, who passed away in 2006, was 83-22-1 during his eight-year stay at Georgia Southern before he retired in 1989. The Mountaineers entertains Georgia Southern on Black Saturday, October 29 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Eagles were 10-5 last year before the were eliminated by Delaware in the national semifinals.
