Banner Elk native Kate Griewisch will be going up against an elite field at the Penn Relays on Thursday.

The Lenior-Rhyne University junior will be competing at Franklin Field in Phildelphia. It's her second trip to the Penn Relays. She ran the 10,000-meter run and finished fourth in the field last season with a time of 35:10. Griewisch, a two-time All-America in women's cross country, has qualified for nationals in the 10,000. She accomplished that at the Raleigh Relays on March 25, ironically, 12 days after she competed at the indoor nationals in Albaquerque, NM. She finished second and completed the race in the school-record time of 34:39.
The outdoor championships will be held May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif., on the campus of California State University Stanislaus. Griewisch is also a two-time NCAA Division II All-American (2009-10) in women's cross country and was named the 2011 USTFCCCA D-II II Indoor Track & Field Women's Athlete Of The Year for the Southeast Region. USTFCCCA is the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
She finished ninth in the 5,000-meter run at the indoor nationals and just missed earning All-America status. She finished second in the 1,500-meter run last Saturday at the Southeast Regionals hosted by LRU in Hickory.
Thursday's 10,000-meter race at the Penn Relays begins at 10:15 pm EST.
