The Watauga High men's tennis team clinched a tie for the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference Wednesday afternoon on Senior Day at the Sports Complex.

Steve Lake, who will play for his father, Bob Lake, at Appalachian State University next season, Cody Snyder, Partick O'Neal and Ben Proffitt were all honored before the match. Following those ceremonies, the Pioneers (12-4 overall; 10-0 NW3A/4A) dismissed South Caldwell, 7-2. Lake, Michael Smith, Snyder, O'Neal and Chris Ludwig all won in singles play; Lake and Smith were victorious at No.1 doubles; Landon Taylor and O'Neal picked up a win at No.2 doubles. "Coach (Scott) Taylor has been great to work with the last four years," Lake said. "It's been a lot of fun playing for him, and I'm really looking forward to playing for my dad next season at ASU." The Pioneers can nail down the conference championship this afternoon at Hibriten.

In other games, South Caldwell blasted McDowell 13-3 in five innings; West Lincoln upended Hibriten 5-1 and Hickory defeated North Lincoln 14-6. Winning pitcher Kyle Johnson went four innings, struck out seven men and gave up just one hit. He also helped his own cause with an RBI triple. There's two games on the schedule tonight. The Pioneers entertain Fred T. Foard in a make-up game at Pioneer Field. Our coverage begins at 6 pm on Oldies 100.7 FM.
