UPDATED: Friday's NW3A/4A Baseball Round Up PDF Print

The Watauga High baseball team had an open date Friday night as teams began second-round play in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference.

And the Pioneers, because of rain and snow in the forecast last Friday night and early Saturday morning, had their non-conference game with North Davidson postponed on Saturday. No make up date has been announced for that game.
But while the Pioneers were sitting on the sidelines, there were three games played Friday night. South Caldwell, which makes it way to Boone to play the Pioneers Monday night, defeated St. Stephens 1-0 on a walk-off home run in the seventh by Blake Johnson. Jason Cline, who served up the home-run ball, had a one-hit shutout going into the seventh when disaster struck.
The win keeps south Caldwell in first place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. The Spartans (9-1 overall; 6-1 in the NW3A/4A) lead the Pioneers (8-3;4-2) by a game-and-a-half for the No.1 seed.
The Pioneers moved into sole possession of second place as Alexander Central defeated Fred T. Foard 5-0 in Newton. The win moves the Cougars into a third-place tie with the Tigers.
Hibriten picked up its second league win of the year by defeating Hickory, 8-4. Ironically, the Panthers' two league wins have come against the Red Tornadoes. Our coverage of WHS-South Caldwell begins at 6 pm Monday night on Oldies 100.7 FM. The probable pitchers Monday night will be Dylan Norris going for WHS; Jacob Hatton going for South Caldwell. The Spartans have tossed back-to-back shutouts in victories against Hickory and St. Stephens.

NOTES: The Spartans played a make-up game on Saturday and defeated West Caldwell 16-6 in six innings.
