The Appalachian State University baseball team picked up its second win in Southern Conference play on a brisk and snowy Friday afternoon in Boone. The Mountaineers (13-13 overall; 2-8 SoCon) defeated Wofford College 3-1 at Smith Stadium/Beaver Field. It was a fast-moving game that only took a little more than two hours to play.
Winning pitcher Ryan Arrowood (4-1 on the year) was in total control. He turned in another stellar effort as the righthander went eight innings, giving up one earned run, scattering six hits, walking one and striking out ten.
The Mountaineers gave him all the runs he needed by scoring twice in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly by Zack Briggs and an run-scoring single by Hector Crespo handed ASU a 2-0 lead.
The Terriers (14-13; 2-5) got one back with a run in the top of the fifth. Mac Doyle homered with two outs in the frame, making it 2-1, but Arrowood was untouchable from that point on. The Apps picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Jack Myers.
Myers was Appalachian's most productive hitter on the day going 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Taylor Miller came on, and despite giving up two walks in the ninth, picked up his fifth save of the year. The Mountaineers out-hit the Terriers 9-6. Game two of this three-game series will be played Saturday afternoon. Our coverage begins at 2:40 pm on AM 1450, WATA.
