The Avery High football team continued its march in the Class 1AA state playoffs Friday night.

The Vikings, with quarterback Alex Villanueva back in the lineup, defeated Swain County 30-12 in Western Quarterfinals at MacDonald Stadium. The Vikings rolled up 401 yards of offense; Villanueva, who sat out last week's game nursing a shoulder injury, was 13-26 for 243 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Kody Hughes was on the receiving end both times. He had two catches on the night for 105 yards, which  included a 74-yard strike in the second quarter that gave Avery (10-3) a 14-0 lead. Taylor Potter rambled 27 yards with 3:50 left in the first half, giving Avery a commanding 21-0 lead at the intermission.
Potter scored twice on the night; Colton Blackburn ran for 95 yards, and as a team, the Vikings picked up 158 rushing yards. Defensively, the Vikings held Swain County (7-5) to 193 yards. Colton Blackburn led the way with 15 tackles and a forced fumble. Lucas Lecka had 12 stops, including three quarterback sacks and three  tackles-for-loss; Kenny Hicks had two quarterback sacks and 2.5 tfl.
The Vikings now move on to the Western Semifinals. They will play Mitchell, a 35-29 winner over West Wilkes, at home next Friday night beginning at 7:30 pm. The winner of that game will get the winner of Albermarle or Monroe in the Western championship game on December 3. And with the Vikngs the No.1 seed, they would host that game.

In other games, in Class 3A, Hibriten advances to semifinal play by knocking off East Henderson 38-25. The Panthers will now play Asheville at home next Friday night; and in Class 4A, A.C. Reynolds defeated Sun Valley 24-21. The Rockets take on Porter Ridge in the western semifinals next Friday night in Asheville.
