It will take most of the day, according to Watauga elections officials, but by the end of the day, we should know whether the new Watauga County Commission will be three republicans and two democrats, or three democrats and two republicans. That balance is currently separated by 65 votes, republican newcomer Vince Gable with the lead over incumbent Billy Ralph Winkler, a lead that diminished after election night first with absentees and transfer ballots, then with the canvass last Friday.  The recount started at 8am, with two races being recounted—but in the second race, the final outcome may or may not be in today.  The state board of elections is in Madison County today to supervise their botched election tally as they, first of all, try to get their canvass done, then recount votes in the 24th Judicial District Judge’s race.  That race, in which voters were to cast two ballots among three candidates, ended with judge Phil Ginn winning comfortably, but the second seat still up for grabs, with Gary Gavenus in the lead by 135 votes over Hal Harrison.  Over 53,000 votes were cast in that district race.  With the uncertainties over the Madison County issues, it is not clear when we’ll have a final tally in that recount.
