Winkler, Harrison Call for Recount PDF Print

There will be a recount of at least two races from the general election: Both Hal Harrison and Billy Ralph Winkler have called for recounts in their respective races from the November 2nd election—and at just the last moment for Winkler.

Winkler, not wanting to put an economic burden on an already-stressed county budget, was waiting for Harrison—in 3rd place in the 24th judicial district judge’s race behind Gary Gavenus —so that some state funds would be available for the recount.  But it turned out that the judge races were on a different time table, and further complicating things is the continuing saga of the bungled ballots in Madison county—part of the 24th district—where the state board of election will again venture tomorrow to try to get their votes canvassed—something the rest of the state accomplished Friday.  According to the state board, Harrison actually had until noon on the second day after the canvass to ask for action in his race, which now could put the request to Friday or beyond.  But Winkler found out that he could request a recount contingent on another race asking for action, and that’s what he did, just before the 5 o’clock deadline yesterday afternoon.  Just after the deadline passed, it was learned that Harrison went ahead and called for action in his race, so the recount will take place, but just when is in question with the state board in Madison County for their voting issues.
