Tragic weekend on area roads, with a motorcyclist killed in an accident near the Ashe-Wilkes line yesterday afternoon.  The state patrol says the cycle was traveling north on NC 16 approaching the Ashe line just inside Wilkes when he lost control, slammed into a guardrail, throwing him and his passenger off the cycle.

The woman landed off the road, the man in the middle of the highway, causing a call for rescue units from Ashe and Wilkes, as well as Wilkes paramedics.  A landing zone was set up in the Glendale Springs area for two helicopters to transport the injured, but the state patrol reports that 57-year old Terry Lee Starnes of Taylorsville died from his injuries.  The woman was not identified in the report.
