Great Smokies Shootout has Positive Economic Impact

The Hickory Metro Sports Commission hosted the 2014 Great Smokies Shootout basketball tournament over Memorial Day Weekend. More than 150 youth basketball teams from seven states and 1500 players participated in the 2014 event, which was held in Hickory for the fourth year in row.

The Ashe County High boys' soccer team defeated Watauga 3-2 Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams. It was reported that the Huskies defeated WHS for the first time in school history. And according to Ashe County soccer coach Wes Rousseau, the Huskies only tied Watauga in 2009;

The Lees-McRae men’s soccer team climbed Sugar Mountain in Sugar Mountain, N.C., to honor Michael Shope Tuesday afternoon. Shope would have celebrated his 30th birthday. Sugar Mountain is located in the North Carolina High Country and its elevation reaches 5,236 feet and is split along the Eastern Continental Divide.
