An area District Court Judge died over the weekend after an accident on Catawba River.

Our Foothills Bureau reports 25th District Court Judge John Mull was helping a young family member in the water who was having trouble swimming, but once the child was on shore, Mull was missing.

Mull was found about two minutes later under water and unresponsive.  He was later pronounced dead at Grace Hospital in Morganton.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene, in the Glen Alpine community, around 8:00 Sunday evening.

Investigators say Mull may have suffered a heart attack or another medical problem while swimming.  An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Mull’s exact cause of death.
