The Avery A&H Fair is hosting the inaugural High Country Idol competition this weekend at Avery County Middle School in Newland.

Singers will be competing in a karaoke-style event and the two winners will perform on multiple High Country Radio stations and the Mountain Television Network.  The winners will also open for Saturday night’s entertainment at the fair.

The contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and each contestant must pay a $20 entry fee.  All proceeds raised will go to support the fair.

According to organizers, contestants will be split up into two groups: ages 10-17 and adults 18-years-old and older.  Five finalists will be picked from each age group to perform and be judged during the Avery A&H Fair on Thursday, September 3.

Contestants should also bring a music CD with them or sing a capella.

Residents from Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga counties are welcomed to compete.  The contest is also open to residents from Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

Anyone with questions about the event can call Shelley Smith at (704) 640-4166 or e-mail questions to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
