Children Rushed to Cannon After Crash PDF Print

Three patients—two of them children—were rushed from the scene of a horrific crash just out of Newland yesterday afternoon—one of several crashes yesterday in the area. The Newland crash was reported at 2:29pm at the intersection of Old Montezuma Road and Newland Highway, witnesses saying it involved a U-haul truck and a minivan, which was struck in the side.  Trooper Boone said that the crash occurred as Monica Erwin, 28, of Jonas Ridge pulled from Old Montezuma Road out onto NC 181 and into the path of a U-Haul truck driven by Carmila White, 47, of Banner Elk.  The impact hit Erwin’s Chrysler minivan at the sliding door just behind the driver, just where her two sons were seated, especially 5-year old Eli Erwin, who suffered some head injuries in the impact while his brother, Titus, 3, was less seriously injured. First responders and Avery EMS worked to treat the children on the scene, then they were rushed emergency traffic to Cannon Memorial, fortunately nearby. WINGS Air Rescue was called to the helipad at the Linville hospital, but could not fly in the weather, and the children were transferred by ground to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, a radio call from the ambulance inquiring about a possible airlift as they reached the Hickory area.  Trooper Boone of the state patrol said charges were pending as his investigation was incomplete.
