North Wilkesboro Landmark Burns PDF Print

Fire destroyed a North Wilkesboro landmark, one still in use last night when the fire broke out.  It was a typical Saturday night at the North Wilkesboro bowling alley and skating rink—until fire was spotted near the rear of the 60-year old building. The 15 to 20 people inside the 324 Elkin Highway landmark made their way out to safety while firefighters from every fire company in Wilkes—some saying 20 fire companies, converged on the scene. North Wilkesboro Assistant Fire Chief Kipi Hamby said that the fire started on the back, right-hand side of the building, a location where there were two propane heaters. That cause is still under investigation, waiting for the site to cool. The business was a total loss.
