The Caldwell Sheriff’s Office had identified the man who drowned Labor Day in the waters of Wilson’s Creek. Investigators say it was Elder Ortiz Velasquez, who would have been 23 today. Velasquez reportedly drowned in Wilson’s Creek near Brown Mountain Beach Resort late Monday afternoon, the 911 call coming in at 4:52 p.m., but he had been missing for about 45 minutes by then, according to Capt. Larry Price of Collettsville Fire and Rescue. Search crews were at the scene within 10 minutes, but it was much too late for the Guatemalan man. Caldwell officials say he was at the waterway with some friends. The body was found at around 7 p.m., and it took a number of rescuers to lift the body up a steep incline. It was the third fatality in the area since July.
