The N.C. Highway Patrol is blaming the storm for one fatality in our area, as troopers said one person died in a car wreck Friday morning on I-40. The crash was around 1:25 a.m. near mile marker 111 outside Valdese. The Highway Patrol said the driver of a car hit black ice and spun, ending at such an angle that a tractor-trailer couldn’t see the car and hit it, killing the driver. The eastbound lanes of I-40 near mile marker 111, Abees Grove Church Road, are back open after the crash was cleared. No other injuries were reported, and no charges will be filed. Authorities have not released the victim's name.
