Ernest M. Payne, age 96, of Winston Salem, passed away Sunday morning, November 17, 2013 at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Payne was born April 28, 1917 in Watauga County, a son of the late Tommy and Bessie Watson Payne. He retired from Flow Motors in Winston-Salem, and later worked part-time for Food Lion in Winston-Salem. Mr. Payne was a member of Parkland Church.

Mr. Payne is survived by four sons, Larry W. Payne and wife Jan of Charlotte, Bill Payne and wife Kathy of Aynor, South Carolina, Roy Payne of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, and Tony D. Payne of Lexington; one brother, John Payne and wife Sue of Indian Trail, North Carolina, and two sisters, Lillian Woolman and husband Wayne of Port Huron, Michigan, and Avalee Cottrell of Winston-Salem. He is also survived by five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Woodring Payne; five brothers, Lenney, Ransom, Herby, Jimmy, and Collis Payne; one sister, Ola Belle of Gonzales, Texas, and one grandson, John Payne.

Funeral services for Ernest Marshall Payne will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, November 20, 2013, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Pastor Steve Tilley. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkland Church, 2900 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 27127.
