Sam Slade, age 92, of Friendship Church Road, Boone, passed away Thursday morning, November 14, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Slade was born in Minsk, Russia, a son of Nathan and Hava Pelks. He served in the Russian Army under Stalin during World War II. Mr. Slade was a Captain in charge of over 4000 troops and 200 tanks. He was fought in the Seige of Stalingrad, the Battle of Kursk, and was present at the liberation of Berlin. Mr. Slade was wounded and comendated after the war. He and his wife Florence Schwartblat Slade migrated to the United States in 1948 with their daughter, Barbara. The family would like to add that Mr. Slade's wife Florence was a survivor of Auschwitz and Dachou.

Mr. Slade is survived by one daughter, Marsha Lafaille-Slade and partner Patrick McConkey of Boone; two granddaughters, Nicole Lafaille of Winston-Salem, and Sarah Lafaille of Boone, and one grandson, Josh McConkey of Boone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Schwartzblat Slade; one son, Irwin Neal Slade, and one daughter, Barbara Ross.

Private graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Woodlawn Cemetery. Public memorial services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, November 23, 2013, at 2:00 o'clock, at the Boone Moose Lodge, 607 Deerfield Road, Boone, North Caroline, 28607.

A reception will follow the memorial service at the Boone Moose Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Medi Home Hospice, PO Box 1357, Newland, North Carolina, 28607, or to Moose Hearts Orphanage, in care of the Boone Moose Lodge, 607 Deerfield Road, Boone, North Carolina, 28607.
