Iva Dean Wilson Winkler, 101 years old, of Boone, North Carolina passed away on Friday morning July 26, 2013 at her home.

Iva Dean was born on August 17, 1911, in Cove Creek, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Abner Dayton Wilson and Mary Pearl Wilson. She received her education in Cove Creek until her family moved to Boone, where she attended Boone High School. Iva Dean taught elementary school for several years, was an active member of the community and a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church. A firm believer in the philosophy that the greatest service a woman can perform is to make her children advantageous to the world, she endeavored to teach them the fundamental principles of Christianity and service.

Possessing an ardent affection for her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren Iva Dean was a devoted wife and mother in the truest sense. As a constant companion to her husband of 46 years, Gordon Henry Winkler, she was a sharer in all the joy and sorrow. In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Linda Gordon Winkler; five younger sisters, Ruby Trotter; Jean Wainscott; Ruth Martin; Ethel Carmicle; Mary Kathryn Halstead; and younger brother, Len Wilson.

Iva Dean is survived by her daughter, Anna Boyce Phillips Keplar and husband, Cliff Keplar of Boone; daughter, Barbara Winkler Dunnigan and husband, Bob Dunnigan of Boone; five grandchildren; Elizabeth Phillips of Raleigh; David Randolph Phillips and wife, Tiana Phillips of Victoria, British Columbia; Stephen Gordon Phillips of Boone; Robert “Bobby” Lee Dunnigan and wife, Tammy Dunnigan of Boone; Linda Dunnigan Humnick and husband, Paul John Humnick of Maple Grove, Minnesota; and eight great grandchildren, Meagan Christina Phillips of Boone; Daniel Tsali Phillips and Jordan Tanawha Phillips of Victoria, British Columbia; Robert “Trey” Lee Dunnigan III, Courtney Dean Dunnigan and Whitney Leigh Dunnigan of Boone; Abraham David Humnick and Kathryn “Katy” Rose Humnick of Maple Grove, MN.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends and relatives in the Fellowship Hall, following the service.

In lieu of food and flowers, memorials are suggested to go to the First Baptist Church, Rise Up Building Fund, 375 West King Street, Boone, NC 28607, or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Austin & Barnes Funeral Home & Crematory, 194 Queen Street, Boone. Condolences may be shared with the Winkler family at www.austinbarnesfuneralhome.com.
