The Ashe County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a possible connection between a series of bomb threats in the Hickory area and hoaxes that occurred at the court house in Jefferson several weeks ago and the West Jefferson Walmart in the wee hours of last Tuesday morning.
Three pleaded guilty to charges related to the January 2015 death of 32-year-old Brandon Lee Byrd of Iredell County.
Since May 21, businesses and agencies within the 25th Judicial District (Burke, Catawba and Caldwell Counties) have received over 400 bomb threats that were all determined to be hoaxes.

Battling massive amounts of downed trees and debris to rebuild a large portion of the cooperative’s power system devastated by Friday’s powerful storm, over 100 linemen with Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation and visiting crews from five cooperatives have outages down from 18,000 at the height of the outage, to 94 as of 3 pm Monday.
A head on crash resulted in two drivers being airlifted to hospital in Caldwell County. The crash occurred in the 2700 Block of Ellerwood Road, Lenoir, NC.
The Town of Boone Public Works Department will provide town residential storm debris pick-up on a neighborhood by neighborhood basis beginning today, July 11, 2016. Storm debris should be placed curbside and free of all other debris. It is NOT necessary to call to schedule a pick-up. Areas that sustained considerable damage will be first priority. The Town of Boone Facilities Maintenance Division may be contacted at (828)268-6230.
The Town of Boone Greenway Trail is closed Monday to clear storm damage. Pending the degree of damage, there may be a possible closure Tuesday, July 12 as well. The Town of Boone apologizes for any inconvenience and will open the trail as soon as possible.
