A Caldwell County man awaiting trial on murder charges has died in his cell.

Superior Court Judge John O. Craig III has upheld a Watauga County Board of Adjustment ruling that restored a high impact land use permit for a new asphalt plant on U.S. 421.

Due to black ice developing in specific areas of our county, the Avery County Schools will be operating on a 2 hour delay for students on Wednesday, December 14.  Faculty and staff will report on a one hour delay.  We will continue to monitor road conditions this morning just in case road conditions deteriorate.  Please continue to check any updates concerning the operation of school on Wednesday.

The Watauga County Board of Education swore in newly elected board members Monday night.

The State Center for Health Statistics recently released new data on infant mortality in North Carolina. From 2014 to 2015, the infant death rate rose from 7.1 per 1,000 live births to 7.3 per 1,000 live births, representing a 2.8% increase in the state’s infant mortality rate.

The Newland Board of Aldermen discussed a possible burn ban in the town limits at the December 6th regular meeting.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office has issued a “Silver Alert” and a “Code Red” alert for a missing Caldwell County woman.
