State May Require Youngsters To Be Older To Enter Kindergarten

Parents of young children, note that the state House Education Committee has approved a bill that could change the cutoff age for children entering kindergarten. The bill would move the cutoff date from October 16th up to August 31st.

The idea that grew to become the Hayes Center for the Performing Arts started in the offices of the Blowing Rock Stage Company. And, though they grew as separate entities, this week the two group’s boards of directors voted to merge into one.

Opera Debuts At Hayes Center Tonight

According to Hayes Center Director, Jeff Clark, the Hayes Center will continue to bring in other performances and performers from outside the region. For example, tonight opens a weekend of opera that results from a partnership between the Hayes Center, Blowing Rock Stage Company, and ASU’s Schools of Music, and Theatre and Dance.

Scammer in the AreaThe Watauga County Sheriff’s office has received a report of  a scam that is occurring in Watauga, Wilkes and Iredell Counties. The scam involves a black male, approximately 55 years old driving a White Honda Civic. Full Story

A worker fell about 35 feet yesterday at a construction site in the Bishop’s Ridge Development between Boone and Blowing Rock.

Avery County Adds Charges To Boone Drug Case

Three people arrested in Boone last week for selling drugs were charged this week with opium sales in Avery County. The Avery County Drug Task Force has charged Heidi Hayes and Charles Sailors of Boone and James Walker of North Wilkesboro with Opium trafficking.

Watauga County To Sell Two Historic Houses and To Buy Property For High School

Watauga County may sell two houses with long histories in the high country. The Commissioners have discussed plans to sell the house commonly referred to as the Brookshire house currently located on the Brookshire Park property.

Survey Reveals Possible Graves At New High School Site

A recent Archeologist’s survey is suggesting that 19 gravesites rest on the new Watauga High School property. While the survey has not shown bones or confirmed the presence of bodies, geologist Keith Seramur says that radar imaging is revealing grave features, including grave shapes with settled and sunken dirt.

Unseasonably High Temps Break Records on Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain reported record daily high temperatures March 23rd, 24th and 25th according to the official US Weather Service Reporting Station. Located on the Mile High Bridge, the reporting stations’ recorded highs of 65 degrees March 23 broke a previous record of 63 degrees in 1971.

Blowing Rock Hosts Trout Derby and Wine Festival

Blowing Rock will bring folks in during April. Trout fishing season opens April 7th…and that means the 28th Annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby. The weekend begins with their famous fish fry Friday Night April 6th at the Blowing Rock Emergency Services complex downtown.
