Gas prices continue to rise across the nation. Gas prices here  in the High Country are reaching almost $2.60 per gallon and are expected to continue to drift upward during the spring and summer travel seasons.

Ashe County Youth Goes To Spelling Bee Nationals

A High Country youth is on his way to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.  After four years of intense local and regional competition, 12-year-old Josiah Wright of Ashe County won this year’s Regionals in Winston-Salem to gain a chance at the national competition May 30th.

Another Scam In Watauga

Another scam to report in Watauga County. The Sheriff’s Office reports a scam involving a white man in his mid 30’s who goes to a residence and requests work doing roofing, vinyl siding and window replacement. He asks the homeowner for payment in advance.

The results are still coming in, but early indicators show that this year’s Celebrity Serve was a tremendous success. With a few participating restaurants still to report their totals, this year’s event has raised over $43,000 dollars to benefit Watauga County Make A Wish Foundation.

State May Require Youngsters To Be Older To Enter Kindergarten

Parents of young children, note that the state House Education Committee has approved a bill that could change the cutoff age for children entering kindergarten. The bill would move the cutoff date from October 16th up to August 31st.

Avery County Adds Charges To Boone Drug Case

Three people arrested in Boone last week for selling drugs were charged this week with opium sales in Avery County. The Avery County Drug Task Force has charged Heidi Hayes and Charles Sailors of Boone and James Walker of North Wilkesboro with Opium trafficking.
