Scattered rain showers not enough to stifle Linville wildfires PDF Print

Scattered rain showers did little to squelch two fires in Burke County.

By yesterday evening, the fires had burned nearly 1,500 acres. The Dobson Knob fire even jumped its containment lines yesterday. Though firefighters were able to reestablish control, water drops continued to keep the blaze subdued.

Burnout operations were employed to tackle the Shortoff Mountain fire. 332 fire fighters, 4 helicopters, 8 engines, one dozer and one fixed wing support aircraft are attacking the wildfires.

Firefighters still have hope that heavy rainfall will reach the area soon. The Linville Gorge Wilderness is closed until further notice.
