Boone Bypass Tunnel Opens Soon PDF Print
Monday, 31 March 2008 19:17

Governor Mike Easely’s office revealed plans today to open the “421/Boone Subterraduct.”

Unbeknownst to High Country residents, DOT has been working in secret for the past eight years constructing the engineering marvel designed to direct heavy through traffic away from surface streets in Boone. Some residents were reporting “tremors” in the area and officials deemed it was time to reveal the clandestine road project. Ultimately, the tunnel will stretch from a point somewhere between the BREMCO office and the new shopping center at the intersection of old and new 421 on the east side of town to a point somewhere just below the 105 bypass/421 intersection on the west side of town. An exact timetable has not been made public, but an anonymous source within the department told Aisling Broadcasting “soon.” Officials were able to conceal the project until now because the work began in the middle of the tunnel, deep within the earth.
