Humane Society Suspends Dog Adoptions Due to Distemper Death PDF Print

A confirmed case of Canine Distemper at the Watauga Humane Society shelter has caused the suspension of adoptions for the next two weeks.
Lynn Northup, Shelter Manager, said "We are hoping that it is an isolated case, but to be on the safe side protocal recommends closing the dog kennels for 3 weeks. The dog that died was at Animal Medical Center of Boone for a week so we can cut our closing period to 2 weeks. We will not be taking in or adopting any dogs during this time."  Northup went on to explain that the cat facility will remain open and that the staff will use the two weeks for scrubbing and disinfecting.
The case is the first in several years in the county, and comes from a dog found in a rural part of the county, and it may have picked up the disease from an animal in the wild.  Northup said "The virus has a 10-14 day incubation period before dogs show symptoms so we should be safe to adopt out dogs in 2 weeks providing no other dogs show any signs of distemper."
