Update on 'suspicious' Avery incident PDF Print
Monday, 27 August 2007 12:01
An update on a story we brought you earlier- A woman found 20 feet away from an accident scene is reported to be in stable, but serious condition at Johnson City Medical Center. Avery County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene of what appeared to be a car accident on Saturday. 43-year-old Douglas Fleming of Gaston County was driving a car on Richard Childress Road when, for unknown reasons, he skidded into a guard rail. Fleming told officers responding to the scene that he had been alone in the vehicle. EMS workers, however, heard a woman yelling for help 20 feet below the embankment. The woman was confirmed to be a companion of Fleming's. The woman, who has not been identified, was airlifted to Johnson City with serious injuries. The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting deputies in their investigation of the incident. Fleming was charged with drunk driving and more charges may be pending.
