Sherriff’s deputies in Avery County responded to calls of shots fired around 1 p.m. Tuesday after a man discharged a weapon several times inside of his home in the Cranberry community.

According to Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye, deputies responded to a residence across from the Time Square Diner on US Highway 194 and at the intersection of 19-E around 1 p.m. Tuesday when the man called 911, reporting that he had seen someone inside his home.

The man fired several shots inside the residence, despite there not being anyone else inside the home, and refused to put down his weapon as officers arrived. Avery Communications Operators were able to talk the subject into putting down the weapon and stepping outside of the residence, as Sheriff’s Deputies took the subject into custody. The name of the man has not yet been released as charges are pending further investigation.
