The Blue Ridge Chapter of the American Red Cross is asking for assistance in supporting two families that have been displaced due to two separate fires in Wilkes County on Monday. The first fire occurred at an apartment complex in North Wilkesboro located at 302 J Street. Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 2 a.m. Monday morning and luckily were able to keep the blaze from spreading to other units. According to North Wilkesboro Fire Chief Niki Hamby, the fire began in a bed of the one-room apartment after the woman who lives there fell asleep while smoking.

The American Red Cross is asking for donations of food, seasonal garments, clothing, and storage containers. They are also asking for the same items as well as blankets and baby items to help a family of seven whose mobile home was destroyed by fire around 11 a.m. Monday on Hamlet Road in Pleasant Hill. According to Pleasant Hill Fire Chief Andy Chatman, the blaze likely started inside the family’s laundry room.

For more information on how to assist the American Red Cross and their efforts, contact Steve Marks at 828-964-3915.
