The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and State Bureau of Investigation have completed their investigation into a security breach at the county jail, and they’ve made arrests in connection with the case. The investigation was prompted by discovery of a security breach in the jail’s visitation center that allowed for the introduction of dangerous contraband into the jail. As of yesterday, five individuals have been arrested. 26-year-old Scott Thomas Deiters of Deep Gap was charged with providing drugs to inmates. 28-year-old James Harold Saylor of Johnson City, Tn., 42-year-old Kevin Michael Deiters of Deep Gap and 22-year-old Danielle Marie Hampton of Boone were charged with possession of controlled substance on jail premises and with providing drugs to inmates. And, 23-year-old David Charles Deiters of Deep Gap was charged with Possession of Controlled Substance On Jail Premises, Providing Drugs to Inmates and with Burning of a Public Building. All five are being held on secured bonds. Also stemming from the investigation, 26-year-old Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer Jacob E. Cornett of Vilas was charged and arrested for providing cigarettes to inmates. He was released. In an interview, Chief Deputy of Investigations, Deedee Rominger said the contraband in this case did include drugs. Rominger confirmed that the smuggled drugs did not include methamphetamine. She also said no weapons were smuggled in. Rominger said although they don’t know how long the breach was in place before officers discovered it, they don’t believe it was a very long time.
