Staff at Morganton’s Broughton Psychiatric Hospital will
come under new supervision following a patient death and fall that led federal
officials to halt Medicaid and Medicare payments.
The moves are designed to
persuade the federal government to restore Medicaid and Medicare funding, as
well as to ensure that clinical staff are supervised by clinical professionals.
The decision was made yesterday by the state
Department of Health and Human Services in response to the February 1 death of
patient Anthony Dewayne Lowery. Lowery died of asphyxia after a staff member
allegedly sat on his torso.
