Scammers target students PDF Print

Appalachian State University Police are receiving reports of Internet scamming. 
Consistent with similar scams nationwide, scammers are sending e-mails to individuals on campus demanding money- saying the sender is a hit man who has been hired to kill the receiver. A statement released by ASU Police alleges that the scammer searches the Internet for personal information about a victim in hopes of convincing the recipient he or she is being followed. According to an FBI alert, the scam e-mail first appeared in December of 2006. Recipients should not respond to the e-mail- instead, contact ASU Police.
