Wildfire on Buckwheat Road could be arson PDF Print
Thursday, 06 September 2007 06:00

Wilkes firefighters are mopping up a 15-acre blaze in the rocky McGrady section of the county today.

According to Brent Triplett with the North Carolina Forest Service, the terrain near Buckwheat Road gave firefighters a tough fight last night.

The steep cliffs made getting to the blaze difficult.

The fire began just after 6 p.m. and firefighters were on scene until 2 a.m. this morning. Several area fire departments responded, including the North Carolina Forest Service’s Fast Team.

The Fast team is like the Rescue Squad, but for wildfires, Triplett says.

At this point, no logical cause has been found, Triplett says- leading the Forest Service to suspect arson.
