Stand up, Speak out, Do something PDF Print

Walk for Awareness is in its 18th year.

This year’s theme is “Stand up, Speak out, Do something,” and Appalachian State University dean of students Susie Greene hopes the community will take that message to heart. In 1989, tragedy struck when faculty member Jeni Gray was abducted and murdered. The campus reacted by creating the Walk. It’s both a memorial and a reminder.

"I think this is a wonderful opportunity for people to learn and to express themselves and for the community to come together and focus on safety and awareness," Greene said.

The Walk, sponsored by the Appalachian Parents Association and University Highlands, starts at 9 p.m. tonight on Appalachian’s Sanford Mall. Prior to the memorial walk, a film and discussion about the Walk’s history will take place at 8 p.m. in Farthing.
