The Appalachian State Mountaineers have defeated the Michigan Wolverines, 34-32! With 26 seconds left in the game, Julian Rauch's 24-yard field goal pushed ASU ahead. Michigan, hailed as the nation's "winningest" team, was defeated.
The upset may have surprised sportscasters, but not the Boone community. Students, alumni and supporters have literally been dancing in the streets.
"I knew it," cried one fan. Word on the street is, expect a "three-peat" in the National Championships.
Sportscasters said today's game was one of the biggest upsets in the history of football. It's the first time a division 1AA school has ever beaten a division 1A school that was ranked in the top twenty. Some experts picked Michigan to be in the 1A National Championship game. That may not happen now- thanks to the Mountaineers!
Hundreds of fans rushed the stadium and paraded the goalposts down Blowing Rock Road this afternoon. Look for pictures on this website shortly.
Tonight at 10:30 on Mac FM 100.7, we'll have live coverage of the Mountaineers' homecoming.
People lined the streets- and bars. Dozens of people sat outside Geno's, waving to honking cars screaming, "Mountaineers!"
Cars on Blowing Rock Road honked for victory!
There was laughter, there was cheering, and yes, there was hugging!
Some students were more enthusiastic than others.
And... down came the goal post,
They filled the streets- under the watchful eyes of local law enforcement.
