‘There are predators out there,’ Sheriff says be vigilant PDF Print

An incident earlier this week should serve as a warning to parents.

A juvenile runaway was discovered on Highway 194 in Watauga County- after allegedly leaving her residence in Tampa Florida with a man she met on the Internet. 32-year-old suspect Brian Wayne Lewis was apprehended and held on a $10,000 secured bond for allegedly contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman wants to make sure a similar incident or worse does not happen to High Country youths.

Parents need to know exactly what their child is doing on the Internet, he says, and who they are talking to.

Websites to look out for include Myspace and Facebook. Make sure you know who your child is friends with on-line.

Often, the new Internet friend is not who he or she appears to be on a computer screen, and meeting in person can have tragic consequences.

Hagaman has seen a lot in his tenure in law enforcement, and hopes parents will take his message to heart.
