Unemployment Down For High Country PDF Print

Unemployment rates decreased in 86 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in May, according to statistics released Friday by the state’s Employment Security Commission.

Avery showed one of the state’s largest drops at 8.2%, down nearly a point from 9.1% in April. Ashe was highest in the region with 11.2%, down from the April figure of 11.3%, the Watauga rate dropped slightly from 7.6% to 7.5%,  and  Caldwell’s rate dropped from 14.5 to 14.1%.  Currituck County had the state’s lowest unemployment rate in May, at 4.9 percent. Meanwhile, Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate, at 16 percent.
