Watauga County will begin accepting non-bottle rigid plastics for recycling on July 1, 2010 at the Old Landfill Convenience Center  on Landfill Road (off Hwy. 421, behind Nissan dealership).  There will be a separate container for the rigid plastic material ONLY, as rigid plastics must be kept separate from plastic bottles.   Rigid plastics will not be accepted for recycling at other convenience centers.  Plastic bottles and other #1 and #2 plastics will continue to be accepted at all convenience centers located throughout the county.

“The new rigid plastic recycling program will expand recycling opportunities available to Watauga County residents, further reduce the amount of material being buried in the landfill, reduce fossil fuel consumption and provide the material to make new products such as pipe, flower pots, buckets and other industrial or consumer goods,” said Watauga County Recycling Coordinator Lisa Doty. “We will continue to collect plastic bottles and other #1 and #2 plastics at all of the convenience centers.”
