Gas Leak Causes Evacuations, Highway Closing PDF Print

Some were tense moments yesterday afternoon as a number of Avery County businesses were evacuated due to a gas leak.

At about 4:20, a propane tank at Melange Mountain Bistro at Tynecastle began to leak, and efforts to shut off the gas failed, causing the area to fill with the explosive gas.  Linville firemen were dispatched at 4:23, and arriving, found that the valve was broken and there was no way to shut down the spewing gas, which by this time—being heavier than air—was flowing across highway 105.  Linville firemen and back-up departments evacuated the restaurant where the leak originated and a number of businesses across highway 105, including the Rite Aid Drug store, then closed off the highway before finally managing to close off the gas.  As the gas dissipated and the danger with it, the highway was re-opened shortly after 5pm.
