6:29 a.m. - Incumbent Congresswoman Virginia Foxx defeated challenger Keith Gardner very comfortably in yesterday’s primary election.

When the votes were counted last night, Foxx earned around 29,000 more votes than Gardner.  After winning the Republican nod, Foxx released the following statement:

“First, I want to thank God for the many blessings He has given me this year.  I would also like to thank my family including my husband Tom, my daughter Theresa, and my grandchildren Kenan and Rana for their unconditional love and support.

“And what would this campaign be with out my staff and our many campaign volunteers?  They deserve my heartfelt gratitude for their hard work and remarkable dedication.  To everyone who supported me with your time, your hard work, your contributions, and your prayers: thank you.  Your support is invaluable and will be needed again to win in November.

“Together we can re-energize our tradition of American innovation.  We can spur job-creation and economic growth by focusing on reducing government spending, keeping taxes in check and rolling back burdensome regulations that hold down our country’s innovators and entrepreneurs.

“The simple truth is that today Washington is spending too much and in the wrong way.  Massive government spending is a failed policy that has thrown us ever deeper into debt.  I have done my part by taking a no earmark pledge and voting against the government takeover of healthcare, the bank bailouts and other big-government spending programs.

“Even though your voices have been ignored by many in Washington as the majority party continues its spending spree, I want you to know that I hear your voices loud and clear.  And I will not sit idly by while Washington fritters away your tax dollars and buries generations under a mountain of debt.”

Now Foxx will face off against her Democratic opponent, Billy Kennedy, in November’s general election.
