While it was too late for a spot on the agenda, Floyd Garrison, owner of the Elk Motel appealed to Boone Town Council for a second time last night during the public comments portion of the meeting.
The Elk Motel is in sewage distress, he says- and he doesn’t know how much time it has until complete sewage failure. Garrison wants to connect to the Town of Boone’s sewers- but doing so is pricey.
Originally, Garrison appealed to the Town for funding, and was promised one third of the cost- if the County would provide another third. At this week’s County Commission meeting, the County said it would agree- if the Town of Boone helps it out with another affordable project. Garrison said he feels like a “political football.” He understands it's how the system works- but says time is running out.
He is encouraged, however, by the community.
Garrison says he has been inundated with calls from well-wishers.
According to Garrison, the hotel is more than a private business- it is a mission- offering affordable housing to low-income residents.
The issue will be on the agenda at the next Boone Town Council meeting.
