special_olympics_2010_2.jpg 3:24 p.m. - Around 100 athletes particpated in the Watauga County Parks and Recreation Department's Special Olympics Spring Games today.

App State Associate Athletic Director and Voice of the Mountaineers, David Jackson, served as emcee for the event.  High Country Radio personality David Scott sang the national anthem and Nic Cardwell of Cornerstone Summit Church provided the invocation.  Keron Poteat of Watauga County Parks & Recreation and Watauga County Commissioner Tim Futrelle addressed the athletes before the games began.  Area law enforcement and medical officials helped with the torch-lighting ceremony.  Watauga County’s own Chris Connor led the athletes in the Special Olympic Oath.  The Chick-fil-A Cow even also present at the event to pump up the athletes.

Games included a few standard track and field events, an inflatable obstacle course, bocce ball, volleyball, and aquatics events.  The games were held at Kidd Brewer Stadium, ASU’s Quinn Center and the Watauga County Swim Complex.
