6:30 a.m. - After months of either bad or mixed news regarding the state’s unemployment rate, the North Carolina Employment Security Commission says the unemployment rate dropped in all of the state’s 100 counties last month.

As far as the High Country goes, Alleghany County’s unemployment dropped 1.7 percent to 13.5, Ashe’s rate dropped 2.4 percent to 13.7, Avery’s dropped 1 percentage point to 10.3, Mitchell County’s rate fell 1.9 percent to 12.4, Watauga’s rate fell 0.7 percent to 8.7 percent, and Wilkes County’s rate fell0.9 percentage points to 13.7 percent.

Watauga County continues to pace the all of western North Carolina with the state’s tenth-lowest unemployment rate.

Even with all the good news about falling unemployment rates, our neighbors just down the mountain continue to struggle as the Morganton/Lenoir/Hickory metro area has the state’s highest unemployment rate at 14.5 percent.
