6:25 a.m. - Appalachian State Sports Information Director Mike Flynn said the school could make an official announcement about the new head coach of the men’s basketball team as early as today.

Although unconfirmed, High Country Radio has received several reports that former assistant Jason Capel will be named the head coach.

Capel came on to the Apps’ staff last spring with former head coach Buzz Peterson.

Although he only has one season of coaching experience under his belt, Capel played college ball at Chapel Hill and professional basketball overseas and in the NBA Developmental League.  Capel was briefly included on the Charlotte Bobcats’ roster, but never saw game action.

Capel’s father, Jeff Capel II, is the coach for the NBADL’s Fayetteville Patriots, and his brother, Jeff Capel, is the current head coach for the Oklahoma Sooners.
