Radar showed that the small cell that caused the ice pellets to pelter the area formed on the McDowell-Mitchell county line and raced nearly due north.  The path took the storm over Grandfather Mountain and into Boone, then east of the Jeffersons in Ashe before entering Virginia.  More severe weather appears to be heading to the Piedmont area for the late afternoon and evening.
